An AO3 scene changes when you can hear the cast, the pauses, and the moment the background sound drops away. FanficLab turns a pasted fic excerpt into a full-cast audio performance with character voices, narration, music, and ambience.
FanficLab is independent from Archive of Our Own and the Organization for Transformative Works, and it cannot import an AO3 link. Copy the scene into the Studio from AO3, another fic site, or your own draft.
What audio drama adds to an AO3 scene
A screen reader or text-to-speech tool usually reads the page straight through. Audio drama gives the scene a cast, narration with room to breathe, and sound that follows the action. A hesitation can stay quiet. A confession can land before the music enters. Footsteps or a closing door can carry part of the story.
Choose one fic scene with a clear emotional beat
Do not start with a whole longfic or try to squeeze in an entire chapter. FanficLab currently accepts up to 2,800 characters per generation, so a tight, focused scene usually works better than a whole chapter compressed into one request.
Good starting points include:
- the missing scene canon never gave us;
- the moment everything changes because of your canon divergence;
- a hurt/comfort beat built around care, distance, or relief;
- the payoff after all the mutual pining or slow burn;
- a sharp character study, argument, confession, or reunion;
- a favorite scene from a one-shot or the WIP you keep rereading.
Look for an excerpt with a beginning, a real emotional turn, and a natural stopping point. Quiet subtext works just as well as action, as long as the scene gives the audio something to move through.
Paste the scene into the Audio Drama Studio
Open Text to Audio Drama and paste your excerpt. The fic text is the only thing you need.
Dialogue and narration can stay together. Keep the paragraph breaks, punctuation, interruptions, and deliberate pauses because they help the model follow the rhythm. You do not need to turn the scene into a screenplay or add direction notes to every line.

Add character or image references only when useful
References are optional. You can generate directly from the text or choose one reference mode:
- Character audio: name up to three roles and add one voice reference for each role you want to guide.
- Image: add one visual reference when the location, lighting, character mood, or atmosphere should guide the performance.
- None: let the scene itself guide the cast and sound.
Audio and image references cannot be combined in the same generation. For recurring dialogue, use one clean, separate reference clip for each character role so the cast stays easier to follow. The References and Characters guide explains when each mode is useful.
Generate and listen for the emotional turn
Double-check the displayed credit cost and submit the scene. FanficLab creates the dialogue, narration, expressive delivery, music, and ambience as one audio performance.
Most scenes finish in under five minutes, although longer inputs and busy queues may take more time. You can keep the task open while it processes or return to My Creations later.
When listening, check more than whether each voice sounds different:
- Can you tell who is speaking without looking at the text?
- Does the narration leave room for the dialogue?
- Does the emotional turn land at the right moment?
- Do the dialogue and narration stay clear under the music and ambience?
If the moment does not quite land, change the smallest thing first: tighten the excerpt, choose clearer role names, or use a cleaner reference clip. That usually helps more than rewriting the whole scene.
